🇬🇧 Every time you visit Malatestiana Library you have the impression of entering into a living place, as if writings preserved have also enclosed a piece of soul of their authors. You may think it’s like this in all libraries? Well, we think here there is a unique atmosphere made even more impressive by many curious details. Let’s start with some historical informations. Malatestiana Library owes its name to Malatesta Novello, Lord of Cesena, who in 1450 decided to transform the private library of the Franciscan friars in a public library. Not only he succeeded but also did it first, in fact, Malatesta Library is considered the first public library in the world and thanks to its unique heritage has been included by UNESCO in first place in Italy in the “Register of Memoire du Monde “

🇬🇧 The old part is still illuminated solely by natural light that filters through the windows on the sides and is on the first floor ( location to best isolate it from the soil moisture and from bad weather). Once you pass the imposing front door you find yourself in front of massive shoals of pine wood that preserve the ancient codes. This is the most impressive room in the whole building. The atmosphere is made more fascinating by various symbols. First of all colors: the white of the columns as opposed to the red floor and green walls that evoke the colors of the emblem of Malatesta. The inscriptions on the floor placed at precise points where the light falls in the middle of the day and remember the name of the founder Malatesta Novello. Finally, looking closely at the walls, you can see ancient engravings dating back to ‘400 . Who knows what secret messages hidden?!

🇬🇧 Closed the portal you go to the room which houses the oldest collection of 343 codes . Medicine , philosophy , scriptures close by local and distant purchased during the travel of Lord Malatesta in Constantinople. From giants manuscripts rich of detailed and valuable miniatures to the smallest book in the world readable without lens that encloses a letter of Galileo Galilei on the Copernican theory. From grates you can notice the consumed, lived books…simply immortal!

🇬🇧 In addition to the ancient collections the Malatestiana Library often hosts news and particularities. Now is celebrating the 150th anniversary of Alice in Wonderland dedicating an exhibition of many versions of the book with details on the life of the author Lewis Carroll and we couldn’t stop to learn more about the history of the most curious explorer of the world. Colorful and pleasant , a fairy tale still relevant also for ” grown children ” like us.
